Scott Holton, CFO of Next Frontier Capital

CFO Scott Holton is the sole financial operations team member at Montana-based VC firm Next Frontier Capital. As Scott develops Next Frontier’s vision for the future, Carta’s fast-growing capabilities in Claude play an important role.

"The Investors Plugin for Claude is the tool we'll leverage most as we get ready for Fund V. We can pull and aggregate data from all of our funds and see engagement and impact across LPs. These insights enable us to further relationships and drive satisfaction.

"This time last year, I never thought we would be so far along on our AI journey. Carta makes it much easier on me and, after spending time with the Investors Plugin and other tools, I can see Next Frontier is going to evolve because of Carta and Claude."

An agentic operating system for Carta Law

In June we rolled out an updated agentic engine for Carta Law, our AI-native legal services offering for PE and VC firms formerly known as Avantia. Trained by our lawyers across each service line, the engine manages the workflow across all Carta Law services—triage, document collection, task tracking, and correspondence.

Playbook: Carta's internal plugin marketplace

When we put Claude into the hands of every Carta employee—and challenged them to become AI experts—we saw an explosion of new skills, agents and MCPs. It became clear that setting up the infrastructure to efficiently manage, share, and maintain these tools was going to be as central to our AI journey as providing access. That’s the goal of Playbook, Carta’s new internal plugin store for Claude. It introduces governance where there was chaos, controlling what's available, who can publish, and how updates propagate. Staff invoke the playbook welcome skill to get a bundle recommended for their role and team, see what's trending, and publish from there.

Running an AI-native organization at scale is a novel problem but one we are privileged to be facing. If you’re working on a similar challenge and are interested in learning more about Playbook, get in touch with your Account Manager—we’d love to hear from you.

AI tools for customers

Carta's Plugins are now available on the official Anthropic marketplace and can be installed directly from the Claude app.

We’ve also started adding skills to the Investors Plugin that are designed to work in Excel, using the Claude for Excel add-in. By invoking our skills, you can run sophisticated financial workflows—budget builds, waterfall calculations, portfolio analyses and more—without leaving your workbook. Claude pulls live data from Carta, executes the task, and delivers editable, queryable results.

Here are two examples:

Manage your manco budget in Claude for Excel · Carta Fund ERP

New management company skills in the Investors Plugin bring your live accounting data into spreadsheets, ready for querying and analysis. Load your budget and actuals into Excel and ask Claude questions in natural language, such as breaking down spend by categories, or modeling the impact of a future fundraise.

Carta Compass

In early June we hosted Carta Compass, our annual user conference, at Chase Center in San Francisco. We ran a hands-on afternoon for fund managers on the practical applications of AI in fund administration. Guests arrived to find laptops already loaded with Claude Desktop and the Investors Plugin, then worked through three real-world scenarios:

The format made an impact that can’t be achieved with slide presentations and pre-recorded demos. One attendee ran an impromptu live demo for another attendee mid-session, demonstrating the Investors Plugin's capabilities.

" I just did in minutes what would have taken me days," said one customer after completing the manco budgeting tutorial.

Internal transformation

Building a company of Claude experts

Last week, Carta CEO Henry Ward issued a clear internal message: The most important skill at Carta by the end of 2026—for every person, in every role—will be how well they use Claude. Today, AI is already as capable as an expert fund accountant. The teams that learn to harness that capability will be the ones doing the most consequential work.

Henry has launched an AI training program, designing the first two lessons and assignments personally. It’s mandatory for every single one of our 1,500 employees, from junior sales development reps to the C-suite. Each week the training gets more challenging. The next few months may be difficult, uncomfortable, and intimidating—hallmarks of the AI adoption journey with which you may be very familiar. But we believe this internal training will only help us build better AI-native experiences.

Carta isn’t asking users to take a leap it hasn't made itself, so every lesson we learn during this transformation will carry through to how we build for you.

Surface Carta Total Compensation data in Claude

You can now look up compensation benchmarks and match job descriptions to roles in the Carta Total Compensation database from Claude Desktop—the first two compensation skills available on our Cap Table Plugin. These skills give HR teams, recruiters, and compensation analysts a quick way to look up salary ranges, retrieve equity benchmarks, and match a job description to the Carta Total Compensation role taxonomy.

Query any attached document in Carta CRM

Submit a natural language query against any document attached to a record in Carta CRM—resumes, pitch decks, teasers, expert call notes—and get answers without opening the file. The feature uses an MCP tool to pass documents to the LLM, whether that’s the in-app agent shown in the video demo or within your preferred AI tool interface, such as Claude.

Capital activity, LP benchmarks, and valuation history are now queryable in the Investors Plugin

Two significant additions to Carta’s Data Warehouse landed this week, increasing the scope of what's queryable through the Carta Investors Plugin:

  1. Capital activity tables are now surfaced in the Data Warehouse and queryable through the Investors Plugin, so you can build reports relating to historical capital calls and distributions. The data covers fund-level history of capital activities, partner-level breakdowns, and capital activity journal entries. LP benchmarks in the form of LP-level DPI, TVPI, and Net IRR are also surfaced, so you can compare LP-level returns against their cohort. 2. Portfolio valuations history, waterfall modeling history, and per-fund holdings value history are now in the Data Warehouse, so you can build reports via the Investors Plugin while maintaining holdings-based access controls. Internal transformation

We’re continuing to migrate internal processes from disparate systems to the Carta Command Line Interface (CLI) so our teams can serve clients better and faster through Claude. We hit two milestones this week:

CFO Symposium

This week, we gathered CFOs at Wildflower Farms in upstate New York for our exclusive East Coast CFO Symposium, and ran an afternoon-long session on the practical applications of AI. Guests opened laptops, fired up Claude and connected to Carta’s system of record. Each guest walked through five real-world scenarios:

Carta Change Agents onsite in Washington, D.C.

As part of Carta’s wider Change Agents initiative, we’ve been facilitating onsite workshops at client sites with customers who want to learn the fundamentals of working in Claude and deep dive on firm-specific use cases. By the end of the day, the QED team was feeling more confident about using Claude in their day-to-day operations. And the Carta team saw once again that the roadblock to AI adoption is not desire, but time set aside to learn and practice. Everyone is in a different place in their AI learning journey and there is no replacement to problem-solving as a group.

Vine Ventures

Carta is building AI-first tools to give customers more access to and greater leverage from their data wherever they want to work. For John McIlree, VP of finance & ops at Vine Ventures, that place is Slack. McIlree recently built a Slack bot that connects Claude to his firm’s Data Warehouse in Carta, so he can answer bespoke portfolio queries on the fly.

Internal transformation

Two staff-facing releases this week demonstrate Carta’s commitment to rebuilding around AI to the benefit of customers. In our fund tax product, we’re now using LLMs to extract data from any previous K-1s shared through the platform. That information is piped into a fund’s tax workpaper so that updated K-1s are issued faster. We also released functionality for custom reporting in the Carta CLI, so our in-house fund admins can create, preview, and publish capital call notices and distributions entirely within Claude, freeing up capacity to support firms with bespoke reporting needs.

AI tools for customers

In April we launched three Claude Plugins that bring Carta data directly into your AI workflow, so you can ask questions, run scenarios, and surface insights without switching context. Each plugin is a package of skills—reusable commands trained on Carta's data models and workflows—that you can use natively in Claude, instead of the Carta platform, allowing you to interact with live systems of record in natural language.

Cap Table Plugin

As a cap table product user, including investors, you can query ownership data, retrieve valuation history, model waterfall or exit scenarios, and more.

Investors Plugin

Work directly with your fund’s investments, performance, and accounting data to analyze investment performance, generate company tear sheets and produce boardroom-ready slides.

Delta-v

Kyle Rogers, COO at venture capital firm Delta-v, tested the Carta Investors Plugin on two specific workflows: LP tear sheet generation and Form ADV inputs. "It blew me away,” said Rogers.

Internal transformation

Earlier this year, we rolled out Claude to the entire company. Within weeks our center of gravity moved from disparate systems to the Command Line Interface (CLI). We've been holding offsites for every major product area, including onboarding, liquidity, valuations, expenses, and fund tax to help our teams rearchitect their workflows for an AI-native future.
As a result, cash reconciliation now happens via the CLI, with Claude processing transactions in advance and batching by confidence level to improve team efficiency.
